Western Red Cedar Decking and Fascia $

Cedar is a fantastic choice for deck building material because of its combination of unique properties. It is dimensionally stable, meaning that is lays flat and stays straight. Decking Comparison: Which Option Fits Your Project?
Choosing the right decking shapes how your outdoor space performs, looks, and holds up over time. Walnut Creek, CA, sits in Contra Costa County where summers run hot and dry and winters bring periodic rainfall — conditions that separate durable options from ones that require constant attention. The breakdown below covers the five categories most commonly requested at Larsen Lumber.
Composite Decking
Composite decking resists warping, fading, and insect damage without annual sealing. It handles Walnut Creek's UV-heavy summers and wet winters with minimal upkeep, and most lines carry manufacturer warranties.
Redwood
Redwood is the most popular wood decking choice for California homeowners. Its natural tannins repel moisture and insects, and it handles the thermal cycling between dry heat and seasonal rain better than most softwoods. Annual sealing helps preserve color and extend lifespan.
Cedar
Cedar stays dimensionally stable, accepts protective stains readily, and runs cooler underfoot than composite or ipe on hot afternoons. It requires periodic sealing but is generally easier to work with than denser hardwoods.
PVC / Vinyl Decking
PVC contains no organic material, so it will not rot, splinter, or absorb moisture. It suits shaded or partially covered decks where moisture lingers longer and requires only light cleaning to maintain appearance.
Ipe and Tropical Hardwoods
Ipe is among the longest-lasting natural decking materials available, with lifespans often cited at 25 years or more. Its density resists scratches and heavy foot traffic, though it requires pre-drilling and penetrating oil rather than film stains.
Which Option Lasts Longest in Northern California?
Ipe and high-quality composite boards tend to perform longest in the Northern California climate when properly installed. For budgets that favor natural wood, redwood and cedar both carry strong track records in Contra Costa County.
▸Composite: Low maintenance, UV stable, 25+ year warranties available, mid-to-high cost.
▸Redwood: Natural insect and moisture resistance, classic look, requires annual sealing.
▸Cedar: Dimensionally stable, cool underfoot, accepts stain well, moderate maintenance.
▸PVC: Fully synthetic, moisture-proof, ideal for covered or shaded applications.
▸Ipe: Maximum durability, highest cost, requires penetrating oil and pre-drilled fasteners.
